Cloverdale Chamber Statement on the End of Harness Racing at Fraser Downs
Cloverdale, BC – The Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce is saddened by the announcement that harness racing will no longer take place at Fraser Downs.
For decades, harness racing has been an important part of Cloverdale’s identity, economy, and community spirit. The Chamber has enjoyed a strong and collaborative partnership with Harness Racing BC, and our thoughts are with their members, families, and supporters who are directly impacted by this transition.
As the City of Surrey develops a new vision for the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, we recognize the tremendous opportunities that lie ahead. With Surrey on track to become the largest city in the region by both population and geography, the fairgrounds can become a centerpiece for community and economic growth. From the potential for a hotel and convention centre, to an enhanced Rodeo and Country Fair experience, and expanded entertainment and recreation options, the redevelopment of the fairgrounds holds promise for creating a true jewel in the heart of Cloverdale.
At the same time, the Chamber is advocating for solutions to preserve local heritage, including finding a new home for the BC Vintage Truck Museum. With its current facility beyond repair, this is an opportunity to reimagine the collection as the Surrey Vintage Truck Museum, ensuring it remains accessible to the public and continues to showcase the region’s rich history.
The Chamber remains committed to working with the City of Surrey, community partners, and local businesses to ensure that the next chapter for the Cloverdale Fairgrounds reflects both the spirit of our past and the potential of our future.
